Top Ultra marathoner Sigl Cruises to 2017 Door County Half Marathon Victory

Tyler Sigl of Seymour cruised to his first Door County Half Marathon victory in 1:10:02, the fifth fastest time in course history.

Sigl, one of the top ultra marathoners in the United States, one of 2,500 runners who took to Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek for the ninth running of the event. Sigl said he used the race as a warm-up for next week’s Ice Age Trail 50 in La Grange, WI.

Scott Mueller of Pewaukee finished second in 1:16:30, while two-time winner Rodee Schneider of Madison finished third in 1:16:51.

On the women’s side, Valerie Hubbard of Onalaska finished in 1:26:19 to top Megan Waples of Mequon, who posted a time of 1:28:55. Jennifer Chaudoir of Green Bay finished third in 1:32:55.

In the Nicolet Bay 5k, 15 year-old Dustin Hudak of Lowell, IN, won his second straight title with a course record of 15:59. Valerie Fetting of Kronenwetter, WI was the top female finisher in 22:07.

The day’s biggest winner finished far behind the leaders. Tom Hafemann of Wausau completed his first half marathon carrying some special fuel.

Hafemann worked with race organizers to have his longtime girlfriend Susie Winterhoff work as a volunteer at the finish line handing out medals. When he crossed the line, she approached to put a medal around Hafemann’s neck, but Hafemann had something for her instead. He dropped to his knee and asked her to marry him. To the delight of the crowd, she said yes.

“I have run several races – and quite honestly this is the one of the best supported run ever. You do an EXCELLENT JOB on all levels. The support is amazing. The volunteers exceptional. I have ZERO complaints or suggestions.”

“I have done a few half marathons around the midwest and this is by far the best. The organization and communication is fantastic and so are the facilities and race perks. The route is also ideal: starting flat, allowing for the body to acclimate ; followed by a steep incline and then down hill once the body gets a little fatigued. I love it!”

Margaret Pennoyer

“I’ve raced all over the world and The Door County Half Marathon is one of my favorites.  It’s very well organized, it’s in the heart of beautiful and peaceful Door County, and the course rolls through some of the most picturesque half marathon miles in the world.”
