It’s hard to imagine today, but the Northern Door community didn’t have a community fitness center of any type before the Door County YMCA built their northern Door location in Fish Creek in 1998.
Within weeks it was an integral part of the community as a gathering space, a fitness center, and an inspirer of new goals and health aspirations.
“When I was a kid growing up in Egg Harbor, me and my friends dreamed of having a gym to go to, a place to work out, a place to swim,” says half marathon course director Myles Dannhausen. “The Y opened its doors a year after I graduated Gibraltar High School, and it had an immediate impact on the area. Later, as a basketball coach, it provided a place to practice, a place for my players to play together outside of the season, and a place to work out. It brings old and young together, and in the long winter, provides a place to go outside of the bars and restaurants. It’s invaluable.”
The Door County YMCA is a cause driven, non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening our communities in spirit, mind and body. Much more than just a fitness center, the Y focuses on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Y is not simply in the community, but a part of it.
The Door County YMCA serves as the community center for folks of all ages. The Y needs to be available to all and must continue to provide programming for the social and wellness needs of our community. Almost 1400 members quietly receive some level of financial assistance and the need continues to grow.
